Weigh In Wednesday

Good morning everyone!

Today's weigh in has me at 226.4 and that is down 1.4 from last week!  I'm thrilled about that since exercise was a bit sporadic this week but food choices were decent.

Food - I'm going to give myself a D- here because I completely flaked out on tracking for most of the week.  I think I may have logged 3 out of 7 days so that's not good.  In my defense, I meal prepped for the better part of last week and the meals were pretty much the exact same each day except for dinner.  

Exercise -  I had higher hopes for exercise this week.  We had fully intended on getting a bike ride in and going to the gym Saturday.  We got dressed and ready to go and Chris's bike had a flat.  And naturally we couldn't find any of our flat repair kits.  So off to the store he goes.  By the time he got home and got it fixed it started raining.  So, yea we *could* have gone to the gym still but it just didn't happen.  Sunday was all day long Fathers day festivities.  Giving myself a C-

Wednesday - 32 minutes walking
Thursday - 2 hour 30 minute tennis match; 48 minutes walking
Friday - Nothing
Saturday - Nothing
Sunday - Nothing
Monday - 31 minutes walking
Tuesday - Nothing

Exercise minutes are at 1083/1000 so I hit my goal there!


So we have a tropical storm bearing down on us here in Louisiana.  And I'm more than a little nervous.  We don't expect it to get as bad as the August flood but it seems that just about any time we get rain, my nerves get on edge.  It's supposed to make landfall early tomorrow morning but we are already starting to get rain bands in off and on.  It's gonna be a soggy few days so I think I may try some more of those fitness blender videos, especially if we can't get out on the roads.  I'm still at work today though.  We will just have to play everything by ear I suppose!

Wednesday Weigh In

Morning everyone!

I weighed in this morning at 228 even, which brings me down 1.2 pounds from last week.  I am completely shocked at this because a) we ate really late last night due to a late start at my tennis match and b) T.O.M. is knocking on the door - sorry t.m.i....

So needless to say I'm very pleased with that number.

Lets see how the rest of the week stacked up.

Food - 

Food was ok-ish but not great.  I tracked, sporadically.   Half the time I log my food but then forget to go back and complete the day.  But our food choices were a lot better this week and we did a considerable amount of meal planning.  So I'm going to give myself a solid B here.

Exercise - 

Wednesday - 64 minutes walking, 10 minutes running (and failing at C25K thanks to shin splints), 21 minutes elliptical
Thursday - 72 minutes walking; 27 minutes doing a Fitness Blender youtube workout
Friday - 32 minutes walking
Saturday - 13 minutes walking
Sunday - 25 minutes elliptical; 35 minutes weights
Monday - 56 minutes walking
Tuesday - 37 minutes walking; 111 minutes tennis match

Total exercise minutes 821/1000!!!!  I should hit my goal easily by next week!  

Last night we had our 2nd Mixed Doubles tennis match of the season and it was looking very iffy at first that it would even happen.  We have been having so much rain lately!  When I arrived at the tennis complex, it started drizzling yet again.  It wasn't raining very hard though and no lightening in the area so our captain and the other teams captain decided to give it a try.  If the rain got worse, we would postpone the matches.  

Thankfully we were able to play though.  It continued to drizzle through the whole first set and finally stopped after that.  But then it got hot and humid.  I sweated buckets and burned a ton of calories.  Even better is that we won!  My partner and I came from behind in the first set to win 7-5; 6-2!  It was nice to win for a change.  I love playing with the ladies, but I really love playing mixed doubles (men/women).  It's so much fun with the different pace of playing with the men who hit hard vs. the women who are usually more strategic with their shots.  It's a really cool dynamic and I love it.

Weekend recap

These weekends sure feel like they are getting shorter and shorter!  You practically just blink and here it is Monday morning.  And just like Garfield and the Boomtown Rats, "I don't like Mondays".

Ah well.  I had high hopes for getting up and hitting the gym this morning before work but sleep won out.  I did manage to get to work early enough to get a 22 minute walk in at least and hopefully I can get my walks done on my breaks today too.

The weekend was pretty low-key which is just the way I like them.  We did a few house things - went to Lowe's, grocery shopped and planned our meals out for the week.  We also found our long-lost dishes from my aunt's storage unit.  We had previously been to the storage unit on 3 separate trips searching high and low for those dishes and we managed to find them.  I'm also mostly caught up on laundry.  Being all exercise-y is a truly wonderful thing but when you and your husband both are doing it, the laundry seems to be never-ending.

We wanted to get something active in this weekend though and originally planned to ride our bikes on Saturday but with all the errands that we did (and dog park goings to), that just didn't happen.  It's been really raining a lot here lately so we haven't had a chance to get as many rides in as we would like.  Chris did mention that he wants to maybe ride his bike to and from the gym.  It's mostly a bike route with a few areas near a crowded road. I'm definitely not ready for that challenge but he decided to do it Sunday.  We knew the weather was going to start getting worse throughout the day so we figured that was our best time to do it was mid-morning.  

Now I am a nervous wreck about riding our bikes on the road.  We have a small stretch (maybe .25 of a mile) outside of our street to go down a heavily traveled road to get to fairly large neighborhood and when we ride that I have about 13 heart attacks until we get to the turn off.  So naturally when Chris used to ride his bike back and forth to work several days a week, I would practically need a Valium each time.  Needless to say, Sunday was practically the same.  He told me the route that he was planning while I finished up the load of laundry and then I would leave to meet him at the gym.  My plan was elliptical and the full weights that I've been neglecting forever.  

Chris took off and I waited about 20 minutes and then left.

I made my arrival at the gym and hopped onto my elliptical.  I got as close as I could to the tvs that had a dog show and the French Open tennis women's final and (naturally) the window so I could watch for Chris to get there.

He finally got there so I could breathe a sigh of relief.

I finished my cardio while he rested for a bit (7.5 miles one way for him) and then we both went to the weights area.

He mainly did arms and upper body while I did the whole kit and kaboodle.  I was just about done when he said he would start back for home.  After about 10 more minutes, I was finished too so I figured I could still make it home before he did so I could grab the shower first.  

On my way back, suddenly a storm popped up.  

So here I am in near panic driving up and down the street that Chris said he would be on trying to desperately find him.  After about 5 minutes of near hysteria, my phone rings.  He was on a totally different street and under a business's over-hang safe and sound.  He said he was fine and that he would wait the rain out (and it did stop just as soon as it started) so he would continue on until he got home.  After about 5 minutes of him assuring me that it was ok, I finally relented and went home too get that shower.

And about 30 minutes later, he made it home.

Just a little soggy.

So the lesson here is to verify the weather before you leave the house.  

The rest of the day was a lot less eventful.   :)

Last week we were also challenged to do a Fitness Blender workout from Mary at Runs to Get Waisted.  And that "low impact" surely wouldn't be a problem.  Ha!  I am so out of shape it's not even funny.   Even Ollie was laughing at my struggles.

I will definitely do this again.  It was fun and could potentially be a nice little warm up exercise complete with stretching (once I get more used to it though).

Wednesday Weigh In

Ah yes, the return of the Wednesday weigh in.  The most dreaded post of the week.  

I was a little worried going into today's weigh in since we had Chinese food on Sunday and my water the last few days has not been quite as good as it should have been.  But I was surprised when I got on the scale and it read 229.2   I'm down 2 lbs since last week!  I'll take it!

As I mentioned in my previous post, it's been a great week as far as exercise and tracking has been going.  Water consumption is definitely better than before but that is still something I need to work on.

Here is the exercise break down:

Thursday - 69 minutes walking
Friday - 30 minutes C25K; 17 minutes walking
Saturday - 31 minutes walking
Sunday - 54 minutes biking
Monday - 30 minutes C25K; 43 minutes walking 
Tuesday - 16 minutes walking

I've amped up the walking significantly here lately and have been trying to take advantage of my 2 daily walk breaks and have attempted to get to work early to squeeze in another 10 minutes if I can.  Now to get weight training back into the fold.  The plan is to go to the gym this afternoon for another round of C25K and weights.  I've got hubby and some friends to text me later and make sure that I actually go.  Hey, you gotta do what you got to do!

And here is a Miles to Mordor update for our facebook group.  As of right now we are at mile 81 and we are on a forest path on the way towards Bree.   We are trucking along nicely!

Better than yesterday (or last week)

June has gotten off to a great start!

I've been fairly diligent with my tracking in My Fitness Pal, even when it's not perfect.  Also, I have inadvertently been on an exercise streak.

It honestly was not my intent, but it's been raining so frequently lately that when the sun came out briefly on Sunday, I asked Chris if he wanted to ride our bikes before the rain came back.  He surprised me by saying yes before I could change my mind!.  (Sunday's are typically our do-nothing-but-stay-in-jammies day).

In other news, I restarted C25K for the zillionth time.  I did Day 1 on Friday and this morning before work, I repeated Day 1, just to start the week fresh.  And at least now that I'm back at the Y, I have a back up indoor track that I can go to for bad weather also.   Time will tell (and Louisiana humidity) as to how this will go.  I wouldn't mind sticking to the full plan again another time around.  I just felt like I was actively losing weight and more fit in general when I was running 3 times per week.

Water also has been much better already too.  I'm probably not quite to the "rule" of drinking half your body weight in ounces per day but I'm averaging about 80oz and even on the weekends.  That is a success in my book.

So I'd definitely give myself an A+ so far this month!

And now for some random stuff that's been going on.

We gave the Buffalo Cauliflower another try.  And while this isn't the best picture, it came out far more delicious than the first time around.  It was lot more crispier and it even tasted better.  This is such a vast difference in what we would normally snack on during the weekends.  And it looks a little burnt because the original recipe was for a regular oven and we have a convection one. So we will just need to eyeball the cauliflower a bit closer to make sure it isn't overdone.

After the bike ride, I attempted to do a challenge that Anna posted to our facebook group.  The punches part went ok, but when it came down to the crunches part... well puppy attack!

I had to end up locking myself in the closet and away from all the animals to finish it up but I did it.  Between the post-bike ride, and the workout, I was a hot mess afterward.

Our facebook group also started a new challenge where we are "Walking to Mordor" and back again.  The total mileage is 3,871 and we have until the end of August.  We are counting running, biking, elliptical-ing, walking, and general exercise - (for example: 15 minutes aerobics = 1 mile).  It's been a fun little challenge so far!  I found a website where you can actually retrace the events in the book near where you are mileage wise.  That site can be found here.

End of the month and a look ahead

As May comes to a close, I definitely am feeling better about a lot of things.  I'm not back to the momentum and drive that I had in 2013, but hopefully that will be around the corner.   No change in weight though but hopefully if I can amp up the diet and the ole exercise I can start seeing some changes there.

I weighed in this morning at 231, which is the same weight I've been flip-flopping around for the last 10 months.

I want to make 3 important goals this coming month.

1.  Water.  I have been doing much, much better on this front so I want to keep this up and try to hit my 100oz each day.

2.  Diet.  FINALLY we were able to just this past week finally make the kitchen livable enough and actually meal plan a bit.  We also made a little experiment to help with our snacking, especially on the weekends.  Chris found a recipe for Buffalo Cauliflower and it actually turned out pretty good!   I've never been a huge cauliflower lover but this may be a good start to me liking it.  I definitely prefer it baked rather than raw.  We will see how this experiment goes.  We are giving Kale a shot next.  

So the plan is to continue meal planning and making smart decisions.  Along these lines, I will start logging faithfully.  I need to log and be honest about it in My Fitness Pal.  (By the way, thank you all who suggested about the app running and the fitbit checking in with My Fitness Pal - mystery solved as to why my MFP app was continuing to "log" me in each day).

3.  Exercise.  May has absolutely been a more active month for me than prior months and I want to build on that.  I'm not going to say that I'm going to work out 6 out of 7 days but I'm going to give myself a fairly easy goal here.  The idea is to not go all balls to the wall right out of the gate.  But I am going to aim for 1000 exercise minutes in June.  That number was fairly attainable for me in the past and of course, I'd love to surpass it but for now, making it a nice start to build from.

Our facebook group is starting a few challenges coming up too, one for weight loss and the other is a mileage challenge.  We are just now trying to iron out the details but we may do something like a Walk (or bike, run, swim, elliptical) to Mordor Challenge, similar to this one!   This will definitely help to want to get those steps in each day and we will likely start tomorrow!

We had our first Mixed Doubles tennis match of the season last night.  It had rained all day long so it was touch and go as to if we were going to be able to get the match in, but finally the clouds lifted for a bit and we got to play.  We lost though.  That team was really, really good.  But I'm proud of how me and my partner played.  He had not played any regular tennis for like 14 years and this was our first time partnering together.  We ended up losing 3-6; 2-6 which isn't horrible. At least it wasn't a blowout.

We celebrated my daughter's 23rd birthday and my parents vow renewal last weekend!  It all turned out nice!


Chris isn't really always grumpy, he just acts like that for pictures.  I promise!

It's been a mostly uneventful few weeks since we got back from vacation so it's been hard to find things to write about.  Here's a few little tidbits I guess.


Eating has horrible lately and so has meal planning (or shall I say, a lack thereof).  So yea, you can't really meal plan when you haven't been to the grocery store in 2 weeks.  I really think we have gotten so spoiled by eating out or ordering in that the motivation to actually cook just isn't there.  I haven't even been logging anything in My Fitness Pal lately.  And on that subject, how in the world is it still counting my streak when I don't even open my app for days at a time?


Has been sporadic but I see glimmers of hope there.  The rains have finally let up a little and we managed to get a bike ride in yesterday.  And I've been actually wrapping my head around looking forward to going to the gym, especially the weights part.  But to actually make the transition from my brain to my actual doing so, hasn't quite happened yet.  


Spring season finished last week and we went out with a whimper.  I really do like this group of ladies though and the plan is to continue to practice with them and stick together.  That will be great for me too because I really  have been wanting to get back to clinics and drills too.  Hoping that they move the practice dates from Monday (bowling) to just about any other day than Thursday (that's when Mixed Doubles league plays).  Speaking of Mixed Doubles, that's what I'm playing this summer and it is gearing up soon.  In fact, we are having our first team meeting and practice tonight.  Once again, I'm being thrown in with all new people but this has all worked out before and hopefully it will again this time around.  I do think I recognize one lady that is on the team that I played against before so there will be a semi-familiar face at least.

I want to ride my bicycle!

That Queen song has been stuck in my head for a week now because guess who has a new bike!?
That would be me.

Chris has been an avid bike lover for a few years now but I've always had other things going on or other distractions happening.  But in the spirit of moving more and needing less pressure on the ole joints, he finally convinced me to take up cycling and he is super excited that is something we can do together.  So we pulled the trigger and got me this beauty.

It's a TREK Skye mountain bike.  And for favorite color reasons, it's purple!  

Chris also had to get his bike tuned up and some chains replaced since it survived the flood so that took a couple days in the repair shop.  And then finally the weather started cooperating us so we took our bikes out for a spin (ha!) on Saturday.  

And being a newbie rider (honestly I haven't ridden a bike since Devyn was little - so at least 20 years - and then that wasn't with any regularity).  Probably the last time I was consistent with riding a bike was when I was in middle school.  I won't even go there as to how long ago that was.  We will just say it's been a long, long time ago.

After some struggle, Chris finally managed to get both of our bikes mounted with minimal damage to the bikes and his car.  

We headed to the LSU Lakes since it's a nice path for runners, walkers and other cyclists with minimal traffic.  We got to the City Park Tennis courts and decided to park there and we were off!  I didn't notice it at the time we started but we went down a really big hill (for Louisiana) that will come into play towards the end of the story.

The first mile flew by and I started realizing how fun this was and how carefree it was to feel the wind in my hair and just cruising along happily.  Then we came to our first intersection.

The stopping part wasn't the problem.  The dismounting and not realizing my foot was on an incline is what did me in.  We stopped to walk our bikes across the intersection and when I got off, I misjudged my footing and took a spill.  Along with the bike on top of me.

It's not too bad though.  Although because I'm on blood thinners it left a shiny bruise but nothing was hurt more than my pride.  And a lesson was learned to always look before I dismount.

We started back up again and this time with no more incidents, thankfully.  

Chris was teaching me the ins and outs of shifting and proper bike etiquette.  (Back in my day, you just got on a bike and rode it!  Hrmph!)

We made one entire loop around both of the LSU Lakes, and also stopped for water at the halfway point at the area that is known as "Baton Rouge Beach" (not a beach, by the way).

As we were nearing the end of our lap and close to the car, Chris had told me to pick up speed because there is a hill ahead.  I was sitting there thinking that he had lost his damn mind because we are FLAT down here.  Sure enough, a hill that I had not noticed before.  And right before the hill was a big puddle of water.  He instructed to just go through the water (maintaining speed).  Uh, no.  I slowed down and went around the puddle and then came to "the hill".

The hill was a struggle.

I was dying trying to peddle up that hill.  I'm sure an 85 year old could have walked faster than I was peddling.  My heart rate jumped as high as I had ever seen it jump on my fitbit.  But I was determined to not get off my bike and walk it up.  I was going to ride that damn hill all the way.  After what felt like 10 minutes, I finally made it.  

Our entire route put us at almost 6.5 miles and for Louisiana, it's a gorgeous route.  Plenty of space to get around the walkers or runners.  Plenty of turtles in the lake, beautiful trees and lots of people watching too.  

Needless to say, it was a great experience and we are definitely looking forward to doing it again.  We are scouting out locations and bike paths in our area for our future adventures and will have more than a few lined up in the coming months!

Flying Pig 5K Race Recap

Our trip to Cincinnati has finally come to and end and it's been back to reality (and work) for the last 2 days.  I'm just now finally getting around to posting about our trip.  I figure that I'll do the actual trip part in another post and just recap the 5K itself here.

Packet Pick Up

We grabbed an uber to bring us downtown to the Duke Energy Expo Center.  It took only 5 minutes to get there since we were staying directly across the river in Covington, Kentucky.  This was my first huge expo and to say it was a bit overwhelming could be an understatement.  I was in big trouble.  So many shiny things! And vendors!  And bondi bands!  And shoes!  With Chris there reining me in was probably a good thing.  There was one slight necessity that we did go to specifically get.  A long sleeved shirt or a hoodie.  Because it was cold a.f. in Cincy.  The weather forecasters LIED.  We were told before we left that the weather would be in the lower 70s.  All indications now were saying upper 40s to low 50s for race time.  Needless to say I wasn't going to be wearing the tank top that I had originally planned to wear or the backup tech t-shirt, maybe as layers, but I digress.

Once I found a shirt that I did like (I ended up with a long sleeved tech shirt) we headed over to packet pick up.  I was also picking up for a friend who was driving in later that night but that went very smoothly for Chris and I both.  No problems at all.  The only thing that was a little weird for me was that the t-shirt pickup was all the way in the back of the exhibition all.  I get it though, they want you to buy all the things on the way to picking up your free shirt.  And well, their marketing strategy worked.

We went to meet friends at a pub and then headed back to the hotel for the evening.  I laid out our multitude of layers and then went to bed.

The morning of we hit a bit more traffic in our uber than the day before and it ended up taking about 15 minutes to get there.  Our driver dropped us off as close as he could to Paul Brown Stadium and then we walked over to where our corrals were near the Great American Ballpark.  It was there that we met up with Tiina for the first time!  Soonafter, Anna and Gary showed up followed by our other two lovely ladies, Mary and Meg.  (Mary, Meg and Gary were our cheering squad for this race).   Anna, Tiina and I were walking the race while Chris was running his very first official 5k race!  His goal was just to finish and to run the whole thing.

I knew going into this that Anna was a very fast walker (she had hauled me around in January!) but I figured that Tiina, (who has an injury) maybe would counteract the swiftness?  Nope!

But honestly, it was a quick pace but it was also a comfortable one.  So it wasn't too bad, except for the hills.  In fact we talked so much the race course just flew by.  It was by far the best race experience that I have ever had at this time I didn't come in dead last either.  So that's a definite WIN!

Chris texted me when we were between mile 2 and 3 that he was finished!  I looked at my watch and realized then that he not only finished in a great time that he crushed his goal.  Previously he only ran on the treadmill and his times were roughly around the 50 minute mark for his 5k runs.  He finished in 37.35!

Riding that high of having my hubby finish in such a great time, I was determined for us to cross 3.1 off under 60 minutes and since we were done with most of the hills, we were able to do just that!  My watch had the course at a bit longer than a typical 5K but we did in fact cross the Finish Swine under our goal!

After The Race

Back to the expo! And we met up with another Lovely Lady, Brittany and her husband, Chris there as well.  We needed to pick up the packets for our marathoners and for more shopping.  This time I ended up with a t-shirt and a tank top (because we live in Louisiana and it would be a long while before I could wear my long sleeved shirt).  Chris was a good sport and didn't grumble too much about my purchases.  Oh, I got a wine glass too.  Because, wine glass.

And then our marathoners put in a request for waffles, so we headed to a restaurant called A Taste of Belgium.  The food was delicious so was the beer!  And unfortunately I was so busy talking and eating that I forgot to get a picture of mine.  But here's one of Chris's burger and his caption.

Then we walked everyone back to their hotel, and uber-ed it back to our hotel for a nice nap!   And it was glorious!  We all then made plans to head back to Mary and Meg's hotel room, get some pizzas and make signs for Meg and Gary's marathon the next morning!  We probably kept Meg up way too late (sorry!!!) but we had a complete blast just laughing and hanging out.  All in all it was a really wonderful race and a way to spend a Saturday.
